If the listing looks like something you are interested in, click on the link provided to go to the agency website and read more. Then go to our vacation rental reviews section and read any reviews we have for them. See the link above.

Expect to spend several hours looking through listings until you get an idea of what is available and what you want. When you have a good short list, post it on our message board to get advice from other Slow Travelers.

Remember, we are not affiliated with any agencies or owners, but we do take paid classified listings from agencies/owners who want Slow Travelers to use them. Our classifieds are listed at the top of each of the listings pages.

About Vacation Rentals in the US

Vacation rentals are not as common in the US as they are in Europe, but they do exist here and are becoming more popular each year. We have spent many months traveling around the US by car and have always managed to stay in places where we can settle for a week or more and do our own cooking.

Stay in Cabin-style Motels: In the country areas, you can usually find cabins to rent. The AAA (American Automobile Association) hotel guide will give you these listings. They are sort of like motels, but consist of several small cabins. We have stayed in cabins on the California coast, in the mountains in Idaho, near Hot Springs Arkansas, and more places than I can remember.

Rent a Condo: In skiing towns there are usually condos for rent. Larger cities may have agencies that specialize in renting furnished apartments (usually for business travelers). Any of these options will let you do a longer, more comfortable trip in the US.

Vacation Rentals: With the Internet, the idea of vacation rentals is finally catching on here! Many of the web sites devoted to listing vacation rentals by owner have many listings in the US. This is changing the way Americans vacation in their own country. Now you can go to Hawaii and rent a cottage for a few weeks. You don't have to stay in expensive hotels and eat every meal in a restaurant. You can find that cottage in the wilderness of Colorado. You don't have to rely on camping for the whole vacation.

Vacation rentals in the US do not use the same Saturday to Saturday system that they use in most countries in Europe. Frequently you can book the vacation rental for exactly the dates you want, although sometimes there is a one week minimum. I have found that vacation rentals in the US are more expensive than comparable rentals in England or Italy. Perhaps as there starts to be more demand and then more competition, the prices will lower.
