Trip Planning for Hawaii!!

We have been going to Hawaii every winter for several years. These are my trip planning notes.

Hawaii weather

The best weather in Kauai is in the summer - July, August, September. November can be a rainy month. December through to June can have rainy days. If you come during that time, figure that 1/2 to 2/3 of your days will be good weather - sunny, temperatures near 80, good swimming.

Hawaii water

In the winter, the north shore is more rainy than the other parts of the island. The water is more rough there then. In the summer, the water is calmer in the north and more rough on the south shore.

Hawaii Notes

Hawaii is the place we go most winters to relax and soak up the sun. We've been to Maui twice, and to Oahu several times, but now we always come to Kauai (the Garden Isle - the northern most island). I think the reason we like it the best is that we have spent so much time there that it is all very familiar to us. But maybe we are just getting old and set in our ways!

In the summer of 1989, we spent 3 months in a cottage in Poipu, on the southern end of Kauai. That was when we really got to know Kauai. When we first started coming to Kauai in the early 80s, we were more energetic and explored the island and did some hiking. Now we don't do much except go for long walks in the morning and swim in the afternoon. And the occasional Mai Tai at Brenneckes.

The summer is a wonderful time to be in Hawaii, but we usually go in the winter to escape some of the Santa Fe cold and snow. You can get some overcast days and rain in the winter, but many days are in the low 80s and the swimming is wonderful.

All the Hawaiian Islands are full of little cottages that you can rent by the night, week or month. There are also large, more spectacular, houses for rent. We have dealt with a couple of agencies on Kauai and stayed in a few different houses. We have our reviews of them here. We have also included a few "things to do" for Kauai.
