Amy's NYC Restaurant List

Amy from MA

Here's the places we like largely in my parent's upper East Side neighborhood, roughly in fancy to grubby order.

Jo Jo: E.64th at Lexington - French-ish, pretty room, nice food but tables very cramped (though we've overheard some pretty juicy conversations here!). They do a tasting menu which is very good. Some vegetarian and "lighter" things on the menu.

Cafe Boulud: E. 76th (at Madison) - excellent, nice atmosphere but not stuffy. Everything I've had here is superb. I remember a shellfish dish which tasted heavenly, and smelled so great people all around were asking "what IS that?"

Quartorze Bis: E.79th St (at 1st Ave) - French, expensive but very good.

Cafe Crocodile: E. 74th (at 1st) - French-Med (I like the Morroccan dishes); pretty place.

Payard: Lexington at 74th - Fun when you want to pretend to be one of the "ladies who lunch". Great pastries! I've never had dinner here, but my Mom says its very good.

The Sultan: 2nd at 74th - Turkish neighborhood place where I trot out my six words of Turkish with the owner. Wonderful mezze assortment plate, good grilled fish.

Mingala: 1st at 72nd - Burmese, which is sort of like Thai/Indian/Vietnamese. Lots of good curries, Rangoon Night Market Noodles with Duck; strange and addictive salads like green tea leaf (really! It's great!)

Sushi of Gari: E. 78th at 1st - Good sushi in a hole-in-the wall.

Simon's Chinese: 1st at 73rd - Reliable Chinese, pretty good for upper east side (we go down to Chinatown or to Queens for "real" Chinese). Great Cantonese soups.

Malaga: E. 73rd at 1st - Good old fashioned Spanish, but very tasty - paella, anything with garlic or green sauce. A place to go with friends when you want to get loud and have shrimp in garlic sauce, and Sangria.

There are tons of Italian places along 1st and 2nd, all of which seem to have the same menu. None sticks out for me, but some have been pretty good. See where folks are walking out happy.

Mezzaluna: 3rd at 74th- Tiny place with good basic Italian food, fair prices.

JG Mellon: 3rd at 74th - Great burgers, pub atmosphere.

EJ's: 3rd Ave at 73rd - Diner, good brunches, good for kids.

Pintaile's Pizza: Several on the East Side- Super, thin pizzas from wood oven. Slow delivery - we usually pick up.
