Directions: In Penn Quarter very close to the Gallery Place metro stop I did not eat a full meal at La Tasca but I did have tapas on two occasions. It's a two-level restaurant with traditional and rustic decor. One Saturday afternoon my friends stopped in at 4PM, starving after a trip to the crowded American History Museum. It was quite busy but we got food and tapas fast which was what we needed! We had boquerones (fresh marinated anchovies), steamed mussels, and pimientos fritos (small peppers fried and sprinkled with coarse salt) followed by a big plate of thinly sliced serrano ham and chunks of manchego. Everything was good - not great, but it hit the spot. We also had a bottle of albarino and one glass of red - the check was about $80, I think. Later in the week I went in for happy hour - if I only knew before what I found then! From 4:30 to 7:00 every day you can sit in the bar (or maybe it's AT the bar, so check) and get a glass of wine for $3.50 or a whole bottle for $15. The white wine, which I tried, was a perfectly acceptable Penedes white. You can also get Sangria (they have several kinds) or draft beer for $3.50, I believe. At happy hour there are also a bunch of tapas for $2.50, including fried calamari, grilled chorizo, tortilla (the Spanish egg and potato omelette) and pan a catalana (bread with tomato on top.) I tried the albondigas (meatballs) which were tasty enough for $2.50 - three big meatballs and sauce. Next time I need some post-museum drink and food at 4:30 PM this is where I am heading. It's not gourmet, I believe it is a chain, but it was good and I would definitely go back. Especially for happy hour. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
