Basis Great American Fusion without the confusion. One of Phoenix's unsung best.

In a city as new as Phoenix finding "ambiance" for the exterior of a restaurant is a virtual impossibility. As a result many fine, small restaurants get overlooked because they exist in strip malls. Such is the case with Basis.

Celebrating it's 5th year we have been patrons of this restaurant since the beginning. Located in a strip mall next to a Pizza hut delivery location the outside of Basis makes you think twice. But friends who we respect recommended it back in 2003 so we took a chance. It is one we have never regretted.

The menu is American Fusion. Translated that means wonderful flights of fancy based in American ingredients. Some of my favorites are the crispy duck breast (always problematic as duck can be greasy and fishy) with polenta and a blueberry reduction. HEAVEN. DH's favorite is scallops (4 large) with the most minute dab of wasabi and a wonderful sauce. The boneless hot wings (appetizer) are not chicken mcnuggets but rather wings which the restaurant debones and then stuffs with a mild blue cheese.

There isn't a loser on the menu and we've eaten them all. Chef Mark owns the restaurant, it isn't his goal to start a chain but just to do the best he can with this single restaurant. Problem is us regulars don't like to talk it up because we don't want him getting famous and going away.

But I'll share this great restaurant with my slow trav friends. Both thumbs up.
