This AMAZING French Bistro in Manhattan was a prefect way to celebrate my birthday!

We sent to Brasserie Les Halles on Park avenue South (at 29th) for my birthday dinner. We arrived on time and were promptly seated in the corner, by the window. Les Halles is a very busy and noisy restaurant (it was Friday night!), so the table by the window is actually better, as it’s a bit quieter.

I have been a fan of Anthony Bourdain for many years. I have his Les Halles cookbook, from which I have tried many recipes, most notably his French onion soup, his blanquette de veau and also the best roast chicken recipe I have even tried. So it is without hesitation that I wanted to try his restaurant. We were extremely impressed. The food is spectacular!

We started with a bottle of Haut-Médoc and a delicious Terrine Maison (a country-style pâté) served with a perfect baguette, crisp cornichons and Dijon mustard. Then I had the onglet à l’échalotte (a hanger steak) served with perfectly crisp fries and a smooth and rich roasted shallot and red wine sauce. My partner had the cassoulet, which is a traditional French dish made with pork sausage, duck and pork belly, in a white bean sauce. Yes, it IS a lot of meat in one dish! But it was absolutely incredible!

Dessert was this delicious and perfectly executed crème brulée, followed by a pot of hot coffee.

Service was excellent and friendly. Honestly, I think Brasserie Les Halles is at par with the great French bistros of Paris. Even the décor and ambiance are very Parisian! It’s open for breakfast and lunch as well and there is a second location in NYC, on John Street, off Broadway. We will definitely go back next time we’re in New York!
