After a good 2 1/2 hour hike in the Los Padres National Forest, my husband and I went and had dinner at Mattei's. They service was incredibly friendly, and the setting was cute, rustic, and had an open feel as the back room was all windows facing their yard. We sat in the back room. There were also tables nearer to fireplaces, and it all seemed quite cosy. We started with a butternut squash soup with creme fraiche that was spectacular. I forgot to mention their fresh baked breads that were delicious as well. The rosemary bread was amazing, as was the cornbread! We enjoyed a Pinot Noir from the central CA coast which was good. The best wines are assumedly sold by the bottle, and I knew we wouldn't finish a whole bottle so ordered by the glass. Jeremy had the grilled top sirloin with mashed polenta, and I had the 6 oz. filet and stilton cheese port wine sauce with and carmelized onion potato gratin. Jeremy loved his, but my filet was amazing. The second the fork hit the steak it melted. Jeremy kept dipping into my sauce, and the carmelized onions from the potato gratin were such a nice touch. We ended with cappucinos, and a chocolate cake with a chocolate sorbet (can't remember the name) that made you want to punch yourself in the face. It was THAT good. But very rich! The whole dinner for 2 with 2 glasses of wine, a split soup starter, 2 entrees, cappucinos, and desert was $120. Well worth it! I will definately return to Mattei's!
