Wine bar/restaurant conveniently located near theater district and Union Square, offering wonderful meals and quality wines at reasonable prices.

Three of us enjoyed a wonderful meal accompanied by wine flights that featured lesser known wineries, for a reasonable price.

To begin, we were seated in the restaurant’s lower level, which is warm and quiet – without the buzz of the upstairs seating near the popular bar. Our waiter was great – attentive but not intrusive, and kept in mind that we told him at the beginning that we had theater tickets and so had to leave by 7:45 pm.

We all chose to order from the 3 course prix fixe menu, at $32.00 (http://www.firstcrush.com/menus/prixfixe.pdf). There were several choices for each course. Two started with the poached asparagus – meaty and perfectly cooked stalks gently napped in a light hollandaise with garnish of frisee and croutons made from buttery brioche. The third had a generous and flavorful heirloom tomato salad, with watermelon, mache and ricotta salata. We did go off the prix fixe menu, however, adding a cornucopia of their deservedly famous truffle oil fries – absolutely sinful and delicious.

For mains, two of us enjoyed the pistachio crusted halibut with an assortment of fresh al dente vegetables; the third had a large plate of rigatoni with lamb sugo with olives, raisins and pecorino.

With our dinners each of us chose a different flight of generous pours of three wines from their flights menu (http://www.firstcrush.com/menus/flightlist.pdf). One of us had whites from their “Summer Sampler”, one a flight of Rhones, and the third, a flight of Pinots.

Desserts were amazing; one a fruit and shortbread garnished crème brulee; one a light and tasty bread pudding, and when the sorbet requested by the third proved unavailable, the waiter arrived with a generous dish of a wonderful homemade gelato to take its place.

With our wine flights and the shared fries, our total cost, including tip and taxes, came to $62. each. A modest price for a delicious and well served meal.
