When: 2012

Even at off-hours, people still come from near and far to line up for super-fresh and excellent Mexican food at this informal neighborhood place.

Even at 2:30 in the afternoon the line snaked down the street from the screen door of this taco stand. We took turns with others to stand near the front and crane our necks to peer at the menu. Many offerings, all very inexpensive so you order more than one, as the portions for most of the tacos aren't huge.

It's great to finally reach the front and be able to see the women inside working with masa dough at the griddle to make tortillas. We ordered the no. 16, which was grilled medium-hot peppers with tasty marinated pork and a bit of cheese, served with three freshly-made tortillas. We also ordered the guacamole (a huge pile of guacamole with 2 tortillas) and a chicken tamale. After ordering you go to the next room to grab a table and serve yourself silverware and little cups of a variety of salsas. When the food is ready they call your number. They serve several Mexican beers.

Everything we had was excellent, and I especially recommend that no. 16. I would love one of those right now. A fun experience, worth the wait. There's street parking in the neighborhood.
