Great sustainable seafood with an outstanding wine list priced at retail.

After touring the Monterey Bay Aquarium and learning about sustainable seafood, Passionfish in Pacific Grove is a perfect place to enjoy guilt-free seafood.

Passionfish specializes in both sustainable seafood and fresh organic California produce. They have recently (January 2007) been seen in Bon Appetit Magazine since sustainable food is one of the 2007 food trends. Not only can you dine on wonderfully prepared seafood but you can also be educated on being a responsible seafood consumer. Did you know that Tilapia is on the "good fish" list? I didn’t. Not only do they use organic produce and sustainable seafood, they also have an outstanding wine list at retail prices.

Passionfish is located in the center of Pacific Grove. We had made a reservation from the website before leaving Seattle. We arrived at our reserved time and were promptly seated.

The wine list is amazing not only for the prices but the great selection. We selected a Craggy Ridge Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand which I had not seen in Seattle. It was very good but a bit different from the typical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

I started with the Warm Brussel Sprout Salad. The Brussel Sprouts were thinly sliced and sautéed with Korobuta ham. As accent, there were tossed with sweet grapes and salty ricotta salata cheese. My husband had the Goat Cheese Mousse salad with apple and pecans. Both were tasty starters.

For main dish, I had the Scallops with tomato-truffle butter. The truffles are a great accent to the rich scallops. My husband had the Sturgeon in a charmoula marinada. It was good but I don’t really like cumin so I was really glad I got the scallops. He enjoyed it and the recipe is on Epicurious.

We both had dessert and coffee. I wouldn’t recommend their desserts. I had the mint mud pie which was too large, too sweet and too difficult to eat (very firm ice cream). I would recommend sticking with their main menu items instead.

The service was very good and attentive. I would definitely recommend it to any fish lover or anyone who is looking for a great restaurant in the Monterey area.

Price was $110 with for 3 courses with wine without tip.
