Classy California casual Italian restaurant with good food and service

Directions: On Main Street near corner of Santa Cruz, parking lot adjacent

Five of us ate there for dinner on a rainy March night. The entrance is easy to miss and there is a lively bar scene, but they impressed with food and service.

For starters, both the creamy squash soup ($5) and house salad ($7) (with fresh raspberries and candied walnuts) were delicious. We chose an Italian Pinot Grigio ($30) and were pleased with it.

Most of us chose from the pasta section of the menu ($17-19) for our mains: capellini with prawns, meyer lemon risotto with rock shrimp, gnocchi, and cannelloni. Each had wonderful flavor and texture. The gnocchi was chosen by someone who had ordered it before at Valerianos and claimed it was the best she has had since the East Coast.

The menu included several other appetizers and pastas of interest (ravioli with sweet potato in a brown butter and sage sauce anyone?) Only one of us ordered meat, pork tenderloin wrapped in pancetta. About half a dozen meat selections, a couple of fish, and the obligatory chicken were offered.

One tiramisu was sampled - presented with fresh blueberries and raspberries, very light according to those who tasted it. My capuccino was excellent.

Our server was above average--she seemed to appear at just the right moments. Noise level was fine for conversation, although we were toward the edge of the room.

If you are looking for a nice dinner in Los Gatos, I recommend Valerianos. Reservations are probably necessary.
