Review 1306: Owner, Sunset View Farm

Review by Lorena Masters from CT

6bed/3bath house in Andes, in the Catskills, New York

Everyone also hangs out in the kitchen, photo by

Winter 2005, long weekend

We went to the Catskills for a nearby getaway from the noise and we found bliss. The house was completely private yet easy to get to. The website doesn't do it justice. We hiked around the property (over 100 acres) and saw deer and turkey tracks. We sledded down the hayfield. And those of us that skied had a half hour drive but there were no crowds. The country side is beautiful.

Nearby Amenities

The town of Andes was very cool to poke around and has great food. We couldn't find everything in the local grocery stores, but the owner warned us to bring fresh herbs, etc. and has a well stocked pantry. We didn't eat out a big meal but cooked in the huge kitchen and hung out at the dining table for hours.

The House/Apartment

The house is in great shape. Old but renovated. Great beds and linens. The kitchen rocks. The woodstove always had at least half of us sitting in front of it. There was room enough for us to get together or find a quiet corner.

Being winter, we didn't sit outside but there is a great front porch. There's a creek by the house and a small pond our dog seemed interested in swimming in even though it was half ice!

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was clean and most was new or reupholstered. The owners obviously take pride in their house. There are cool things and artwork. TV and DVD and VCR and stereo.

I personally have never slept so good. I think it was the quiet. Double pillows for each of us. And a cast iron clawfoot bathtub which I regret not taking advantage of! We had to space our showers out but that was to be expected.

The real luxury was that there was enough dishes etc. for our large group and seating for twelve adults at the dining table was comfortable. Lots of serving platters, bowls, coffee mugs etc. Lots of cooking gadgets and plenty of pots and pans. Definitely a house for foodies like me!

Problems or Bonuses

Only surprise was it was nicer than we expected.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner is great and doubles as a tour guide / concierge. It's not cheap but it's not expensive either and all the amenities are there.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We plan on coming back in the summer to do more hiking and cooking.

Things to do in this area

To be honest we didn't explore much being winter and the driving and we were having too much fun. When we come back we want to go to the local auction and antiquing and horseback riding.
