Review 1666: Hale Makai Cottages, Cottage
cottages in Haena , north end of Kauai, Hawaii
August 2005, 14 days
My wife and I just returned from our first trip to Kauai. We stayed at the Hale Makai Cottages. This property is located on the north shore of Kauai. At first everyone told us the South side of the island was the place to stay but we found that the north shore really gives you the Hawaiian feeling. Hale Makai is in Haena which is right by Tunnels beach and has an amazing backdrop of the NaPali. It was really private with no other resorts or busy properties. The area was absolutely beautiful we hated to leave.
There is plenty places to walk to such as Tunnels Beach, Kee Beach and a small Hawaiian grocery store to grab last minute things. There was a small coffee shop a few doors away that we would walk to and enjoy great smoothies and muffins. They didn't serve a whole lot but the walk was nice and the smoothies were great.
The cottages are very charming. As we walked around nearby properties we noticed a lot of homes on stilts. The cottage were ground level which made them even more apealing. We later found out that the storms washed some homes away leaving them to be required to build on these unattractive stilts. The cottage we stayed in was one of five on a small ocean front property.
The grounds of Hale Makai were amazing. Thick green grass surrounded by beautiful tropical flowers flowing all the way to the edge of the beach. There was no pool but who needs one with the ocean a few steps away. One great thing was the outdoor showers. We would enjoy a swim and then after we would rinse off and relax in the hammock over looking the beach.
The cottages were very clean with the typical tropical decor. The outdoor furniture was the beefy wood furniture that was perfect for outdoor dining.
The cottage we stayed in had queen size bed and the mattress was comfortable. We were so busy during the day that we slept just fine. Our cottage had one bathroom which was plenty for us especially since there was another shower outside.
The greatest part was the kitchen. We want to spend time enjoying the beach and relaxing. Cooking allowed us to spend more time relaxing. We would eat breakfast and dinner all most each day on the deck off the cottage overlooking the ocean. And if we got hungry at the beach we could just run back to the cottage and make a sandwich. The kitchen itself was fine, not the best of the best but fully equipped with all our needs.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would highly recommend Hale Makai Cottages. They are almost a hidden treasure and we will definately be planning another trip to Kauai.
Things to do in this area
There were plenty of things for us to do. We walked the beach each morning enjoying the view and scoping out the amazing nearby private estates. There was great snorkeling right in front of the cottages but a few times we walked to Tunnels beach where we also found great snorkeling.
