Review 1734: West Eleventh, Leonardo Suite

Review by gloria from CA who is a SlowTrav Contributor

apartments in the Village, New York City, New York

September 2005, 6 days

Located on W. 11th between Bleeker and W. 4th in the West Village. 2 buildings away from Magnolia Bakery. Tree lined neighborhood.

Nearby Amenities

Gristedes Market is 3 blocks away. Small stores, restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops everywhere.

The House/Apartment

Older townhouse made into 4-5 apts. on 4 floors. We rented the Leonardo Suite on the ground floor of the building, so our windows were at sidewalk level. This was a "studio apartment". It consisted of a large bedroom with sitting area and large bathroom. Double paned windows so the inside of the apartment was very quiet.

Garden area behind the house that we did not use.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Furniture in pretty good shape. There are 2 large overstuffed chairs with a round table in the middle. Two large armoires, one for hanging clothes, one with drawers.

The day we arrived, we noticed that the wastebasket had not been emptied. There were some cereal crumbs left at the table. However, the days after that, the room was cleaned and tidyed up nicely.

2 twin beds pushed together to form a large king size, similar to what one finds in Europe. Beds were comfortable. Linens were changed once during the week.

The bathroom was very large with an old fashioned tub and a good shower. The bathroom could use some updating. Laminate was peeling off the cabinet. There was a small hole in the wall near the toilet. The bathroom cabinet contained what looked like shampoos and lotions left from former clients. Ample towels. Towels changed only if left on the floor. The toilet paper holder was held together with tape.

Coffee maker, small fridge, 2 mugs. No cutlery or dishes.

Problems or Bonuses

Can't beat the location. We spent all our time in the area of Greenwich Village, Soho, Nolita, Tribeca, meatpacking district. We walked everywhere. Took a cab on arrival and departure only. Subways are close by.

The one strange thing we encountered was that to get to our apartment, we had to go through a kitchen/sitting/storage area that belonged to the proprietors. We could only use this area as a pass through. I believe that this situation was only for the apartment we rented.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Communication with the owners was very professional. Eva, the onsite person was very helpful and able to answer any questions we had. We paid $180/nt. The pictures on the web page were pretty accurate.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I think the pluses outweigh the minuses of this place. The criticisms I have are very minor. You cannot beat the location. The apartment was very comfortable. I would definitely book this place again. As a matter of fact, I'm planning my trip for next September already.
