Review 2009: Rolling Waves Beach Cottages, Cottage
1bed/1bath cottage in Longboat key, Florida
February 2006, one week
Rolling Waves is in the fashioable area of Longboat Key, right on the beach. The area is very convenient and the beach is great.
We could have walked to some restaurants but chose to drive. There is a bike path on both sides of a pretty busy road. Closest grocery store and restaurants were about three minutes by car.
Ok, This is not for everyone. If you love the condo life and slick, glossy surroundings, it's probably not for you. These are old-fashioned beach cottages, that could have been lifted from the 50's. Painted in beachy colors, very clean, and with all the stuff you need (TV, microwave, stove, fridge, clean bathrooms) but a little bit worn and not fancy at all. Right on the beach. Quiet. Friendly caretaker was not always there, but her cell would always answer right away if you needed her.
Nice wooden deck outside with table, umbrella and chairs. A few feet to a firepit on the back of the beach with more chairs. Lounges on the beach which was 2 minutes walk from the cottage (we could see it from our cottage, which was one of the two closest to the beach). A visiting heron came to beg. Don't feed him - he has a wicked beak!
Furniture was a little bit worn but nice. The couch was a futon, which I hate, but could be handy for extra people. Everything was clean, clean and very beachy.
Beds were OK, if not the best that I have ever had. The bedroom had a ceiling fan and pretty shutters. Bathroom was small but nice--big old shower. Caswell Massy amenities. Lots of extra towels, but there was a laundry if you needed that.
Largeish eat-in kitchen was easy to use. We ate dinner there twice. OK pots and pans etc. Big refrigerator.
Problems or Bonuses
We loved this place. While others were stuck away from the beach, we could look out our front window and see the sun go down on the ocean. We could take a walk on the beach every morning with lots of other friendly people who said hi - wonder if that's just an american thing? It was cool and sunny - breezy too. We saw surfers the first day, unusual for this area.
Some really good restaurants nearby or just go to the Harry's carry out for excellent meals to eat on the deck.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
I had to change the date to fewer days and they were visibly disappointed but fixed up everything beautifully. We came in early and the onsite person had me call when we got in to see if we could come right away. When we got there they were still cleaning, but we took a quick trip to the grocery and came back in half an hour and the place was spotless. very friendly but not intrusive. Gave good restaurnat tips when I asked.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Oh yes! But you would have to be the kind of a person who would love a simple beachy place.
Things to do in this area
As I said, don't forget Harry's for take out lunch or dinner, although the restarant is great for brunch too. We took a lovely boat ride in a sailboat on the bay. Good museums (Ringling) . If you have kids, go to Mote Marine and Pelican Man (he saves Pelicans). Lots of good seafood here.
