Review 3434: Savannah Getaways, #1010

Review by Jane from CA who is a SlowTrav Contributor

2bed/1bath town-home in Savannah, Georgia

April 2008, 5 nights

This lovely house/condo is situated on Washington Square in the historical center of Savannah. It is charming and a pleasure to come home to or stay in and enjoy. The neighborhood is quiet and very peaceful; although, the houses are very close together in terms of both side neighbors and backyards. This does not create a problem or negative.

Nearby Amenities

The property is perfectly located for exploring historical, downtown Savannah by foot. It is a block from Bay St. and the river. It is easy to stroll neighborhoods and the lovely squares which symbolize this city. Many restaurants are within walking distance. It is necessary to drive to a grocery story; however, there are small delis in the neighborhood for special items.

The House/Apartment

This is an historical building. The owners, when in Savannah, live on the second floor. The rental unit is on the ground floor. The kitchen is exceptionally well-equipped including a washer and dryer.

The front door leads into a very comfortable and good sized living area which includes a bar (with nice wine glasses), dining area and living room area. A large bedroom with king bed is off one side of this room. At the other end is the entrance to the kitchen and the door to the backyard. Off the kitchen are three stairs leading to the bathroom and other bedroom. This bedroom has a double bed and a single bed. There is an abundance of closet and drawer space.

The house is air-conditioned and has ceiling fans in all the rooms.

There is a nice little garden/patio area with a fountain, barbecue facilities and outdoor furniture. This is fenced in so is very private.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was comfortable and attractive with plenty of available seating for family and friends. This is a good place in which to entertain. We had a gathering of 20 people for wine and cheese and there was plenty of room. If the weather is good, the garden area is an excellent addition to entertaining space. It is clear that the owners take pride in this property as it is well-maintained and clean.

The bed were very comfortable. The one down side to this property is that there is just one bathroom and it is small; however, the shower is excellent and roomy. Linens are plush and cozy.

The kitchen is fully equipped with excellent equipment for those who want to cook complete meals. Preparing a gourmet dinner would be very doable. Dishes are nice.

Problems or Bonuses

The owner is wonderfully pleasant and helpful -- just a nice, down to earth guy. He made sure that all was good for us, even giving us milk and cereal for the morning as we got there quite late in the evening. His written directions are thorough and helpful, including restaurant recommendations, tips for the neighborhood, how to use equipment, etc. He would make a nice friend.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I was happy with the agency until the very end of our communications. They were responsive to inquiries and providing needed details. The problem at the end was one of communication between us. I had made the reservation 10 months prior to the rental period and neglected to send the money two weeks prior to arrival (my fault.) The agency did not send an e-mail reminder or contact me until the day before arrival and then charged an additional 4% for using a credit card. Given the time lapse between the agreement and the rental period, I felt that good business practice should have included a more timely communication.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes, I fully recommend this property to anyone and would return without hesitation.
