Review 3684: Owner, Zen Cottage Retreat (#76101)
Studio cottage near Fort Bragg, California
July 2008, 2 nights
The rental is a separate cottage located on the owner's property. It is seven miles north of Fort Bragg on a private road and it is a short walk to the sand dunes leading to 10-mile beach. The location is very secluded and peaceful.
Closest amenities are in Fort Bragg which is 10 minutes away.
The architecture of the cottage is beautiful. It is Asian Zen style. The southern face of the cottage is a wall of windows overlooking a beautiful garden. It is totally open with hardwood bamboo flooring with radiant heat. You access the cottage via an elevated deck. It is in excellent condition.
You can sit on the deck and overlook the garden. The owner's home is nearby, which faces a large pond. Due to privacy, the owner does request that you limit your access to the pond to times when they are not at home.
The furniture is custom and in wonderful condition. There is a small love seat and chair for watching TV. Dish TV is available along with a DVD and CD. There is an outstanding surround-sound Bose speaker system. It was very clean.
There is no dining area.
The bed was wonderful. It is located in an alcove and there are sliding panels to separate it from the studio and creating privacy. It looks out to the east and there is a moon window.
The bathroom is stunning and large. It has slate flooring, a standing bowl sink and a walking glass block shower. The colors are sea foam cream, which adds to the peaceful serenity.
The kitchen has a stove top, sink, refrigerator, microwave and good coffee maker. There are adequate pans and dishes for two people. We did not cook.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The owner was prompt at replying to my emails and easy to work with. The rental was paid by check.
The owners respects your privacy and expects you to respect their privacy. Even though they are located next door, we did not see them during our stay.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Yes if you are looking for a peaceful secluded getaway. It is very private with wonderful accommodations. It is perfect for a honeymoon or a romantic retreat. Without any dining area, it is a little difficult to eat at the cottage.
Things to do in this area
Mendocino is located just 20 minutes away and is a charming village. There are excellent restaurants, a vibrant art community and many shops to keep you occupied. We recommend Moose Cafe in Mendocino where we had a great lunch.
Fort Bragg is also interesting. The main area has several shops and there are good restaurants. We ate at the North Coast Brewery, which has good food and interesting beer. There is great ice cream at Cowlick's, an old-fashion ice cream parlor.
Plants love the area. We recommend the Mendocino Botanical Garden. It will keep a plant lover occupied for hours. If you are interested in nurseries, there are several in the area including Hortus Botanicus and Digging Dog.
There are wineries in Anderson Valley located about one hour away. I recommend Navarro Winery for great whites and cool reds, Schramsberg and Roederer Estate for great sparkling wines.
There are many state parks in the region to explore the seaside or further inland for the redwoods. You could easily spend a week in the area and not see all that it has to offer.
