Review 3759: Owner, Sea Pines Golf Course Villa (#175063)
2bed/2bath house on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
08/09/08 - 08/23/08, 2 weeks
This villa was centrally located in Sea Pines Plantation, at the southern tip of Hilton Head Island (about 45 minutes from Savannah). The low-rise complex has about 40 units situated in three pods. It is not an underdeveloped area, but the entire Plantation has been built with respect for the environment. The front of the complex is set amid many beautiful plants and large trees. It feels very private, although it is not isolated. The back of the unit overlooks the 11th Fairway of the Ocean Course. During the summer months Sea Pines (and HHI, in general) is a very popular spot for family beach vacations. Tennis and golf Vacations (with a more adult population) are popular in the fall and the spring. There are permanent residents in Sea Pines, but the population definitely swells in the summer! There are miles of bike paths.
We love Sea Pines and HHI. We have been vacationing here for years. This is the first time that we have stayed in this particular unit, although we have stayed in this complex many times. All of the units have been very nice and we like the central location.
One really does need a car to enjoy Hilton Head. There is a free Sea Pines Trolley in the summer that takes visitors to the beach as well as to the two Marina's. The Shuttle Stop was across the road from this unit.
There are two Marinas that have shops, groceries, restaurants, and outside entertainment as well as a bar for adults and ice cream stand for the kids. Harbourtown with the Lighthouse of Heritage Classic fame and gorgeous yachts is a five minute drive from the villa.
South Beach Marina is more of a laid back fishing village. It is a seven minute drive from the villa.
Beach is a 7- 10 minute walk, less than a five minute bike ride, or two minutes by car (with free parking). There is a beach bar and restaurant as well as showers and restrooms.
Pool : we had access to the Community Pool (there are several), which was a block away.
We usually go to one of the local supermarkets off of Sea Pines - about a five minute drive.
It takes about 20 minutes to drive from one end of the island to the other. There are a gazillion restaurants on the island and multiple shopping centers. It is a very easy place to drive and traffic is rarely a problem.
These were one floor units and there were approximately 10 in our pod. Entering the villa, there was a laundry closet with a full size washer and dryer or your right and a nice size closet on your left. There was a nice size dining area, a fully equipped cooking kitchen, large living room, and an enclosed "Carolina" Room with windows on three sides in the back of the unit (overlooking the golf course). There is a small hallway separating the living area from the two bedrooms (which are across from one another). The bedrooms were large. Master bedroom w/bath (small stall shower). Guest bedroom with bathroom across the hall (this bathroom could be entered from the hall or from the guest bedroom).
Central Air Conditioning and free WiFi.
In front of the house was an enclosed service area. There were three closets out there - perfect place to store sandy beach items without bringing them into the house!
The Villa was in very good shape and as noted above, it felt peaceful and quiet.
There really was not an outside sitting area. The "Carolina" Room used to be a screened-in porch, but the owner decided to enclose the room.
While the furniture was not new it was in good shape. Living room with sofa, love seat and chair (all very comfy). Large wall-unit with TV and lending library. Carolina room with wicker sofa, two chairs and coffee table. Dining room table sat six comfortably. Tile floors in living area. Carpets in bedrooms (bit worn).
The Villa was immaculate when we arrived.
Beds were very comfortable with pillow top mattresses. Plenty of linens provided for our two week stay. Master bedroom with king-sized bed, double dresser, two nightstands, TV and large closet. Guestroom with qeen-size bed and single bed. Double dresser, nightstand and large closet.
Master bath was a nice size but has only a small stall shower, no bathtub (shower not as small as in Italy!). Second bathroom had a regular bathtub with shower. I didn't mind the stall shower, but DH preferred to use the other bathroom.
Kitchen was very well equipped and is fine for cooking a full meal. Plenty of plates, cups, decent knives, coffee-maker, pots and pans, etc. Refrigerator with ice maker, full stove, dishwasher. I kept the meals simple by choice. One could have definitely made a full dinner here.
Problems or Bonuses
Rental included four beach chairs, two boogie boards, and many beach towels. It was great not to have to bring those things from home or rent/buy them when we arrived.
This is a pet friendly villa and we were able to bring our 67 lb Boxer with us!
I missed having a place to sit outside, with coffee in the morning and wine in the evening. This is more of a personal preference than a problem. I knew when we rented the villa that the screen-in porch was enclosed. You could drag a chair out back, but there is no really level place to put it.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
I rented through VRBO. Scott owns some rental properties and manages some others. I have rented from him several times in the past. I think that he may have recently purchased this unit but I am not sure. Regardless, he is always responsive to our needs and lives nearby in case of an emergency. The unit is accurately reflected on the VRBO website. Prices are listed on the VRBO website.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone. The only reason that I might not select this unit again is that I prefer to have a deck or screened porch.
Things to do in this area
Beach, tennis (kids played everyday), golf (husband and kids), shopping (me, mostly), miniature golf, movies, bike riding.
We (me and two teens) always make a trip to the Tanger Outlets, an easy 25 minute drive for fall shopping. Our kids have been listening to Greg Russell sing under the Oak Tree in Harbour Town (every evening around eight) since they were toddlers ( now 17 & 20). Though we didn't see him this year, we have in recent years been back to catch his show which is just fun family entertainment (he sings a bit, brings the little ones up to sing, and then he sings some oldies that parents and grandparents enjoy).
There are many, many restaurants. Among our favorites are: Charlie L'Toile's, Redfish, Sticky Fingers and New York City Pizza.
