Review 380: Conch Key Cottages, Baby Conch

Review by Gail from New Jersey

cottages in the Keys, Florida

November 2001, 5 days

Conch Key Cottages are located north of Marathon on the Overseas Highway. It is a small key that was once a fishing camp. The grounds were nicely landscaped (even 2 weeks after a hurrican passed through). Cars are not allowed near the cottages. There are designated parking areas for each cottage and wagons for transporting luggage and groceries. Only two other cottages were occupied while we were there. It was very quiet. Our cottage was small. The other cottages are much larger and include two buildings on stilts that look very new.

Nearby Amenities

A car is necessary for everything. There are two supermarkets in Marathon and several markets between Conch Key and Marathon. Restaurants are located all along the Highway, but none within walking distance. Hawks Key Resort is located over the bridge from the Cottages and has several restaurants. Key West is over an hour away, but always worth the trip.

The House/Apartment

The cottage was small, but large enough for the two of us. The other cottages were much larger. We had a screened back porch, deck and hot tub.

Each cottage has its own outside sitting area with hammock, charcoal grill and picnic table. Our unit included the hot tub and was next to the fenced in pool. There was plenty of vegetation screening us from the pool.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was rattan and wood and in very good shape and comfortable. There was a small dining table with 2 chairs in the kitchen and the main room consisted of a queen size bed, two comfortable chairs, tv in a hutch and a closet.

The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was a tub with shower, sink with cabinet and toilet.

The kitchen was very usable. Full size stove and refrigerator. No dishwasher. Plenty of pots and pans and dishes. We cooked several meals there.

Problems or Bonuses

Each cabin is supplied with a two person kayak for exploring the waters. We spent many hours paddling around. The pool is kept at 86 degrees year round. The small beach is nice for sunning and launching the kayak, but not great for swimming. A Keys tradition is sunset and we enjoyed them from here.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked this rental on the internet and it was very easy. Their website is accurate. There are no phones in the rooms. There is a pay phone and internet site located outside the office as well as a coin operate laundry.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I really like this place and recommend it. It is centrally located and secluded. It has the feel of the Keys of 25 years ago.

Things to do in this area

We took a snorkel trip out of Bahia Honda State Park (just south of Marathon). Snorkel/dive boats are available up and down the keys for trips to the reef. Fishing charters are also available. Our favorite restaurant is located in Key West (Louie's Backyard). It's a long ride back, so we usually dine early. There are many restaurants in Marathon.
