Review 4022: Palm Springs Rental Agency, Deauville
1bed/2bath condo in palm springs, California
January, 2009, one month
We had a condo in a large complex in the heart of Palm Springs. We didn't hear sounds from the others and enjoyed the complex overall.
We'd drive for groceries but excellent restaurants were a few blocks away. It's very convenient to the Casino and for the Film Festival, which was our purpose. It's worth the 20-minute drive to Trader Joe's, especially for the Two-Buck Chuck wine (and try the $4 Malbec).
Our condo has clearly been neglected but what we saw of the others was attractive. There are excellent, recently expanded workout facilities.
There are several shared pool areas and each condo has its own balcony/seating area. The main pool was heated in January and there was a hot tub.
Ours, #121, was not the "luxury amenities" advertised. It had stained carpets and sofa and 30-year-old appliances.
The bedding was old and piled. The bathrooms were fine but when we left we reported a persistent drip in the en suite.
The garbage disposal shook and rattled so badly we were reluctant to use it. All the appliances are 30 years old so were tricky to use. The dishwasher, microwave and disposal required a service call. The garbage disposal clogged again on our last day, after normal use (we have a 15-year-old one at home so we know their limits). Though we didn't break/take anything and left no new stains the Agency has refused to refund our $300 security deposit, without explanation.
Problems or Bonuses
We arrived to find a huge ant infestation that the Agency took three days to solve. It was apparently caused by an oily brush, two cleanings had overlooked. For the first three days we got headaches and nausea when we stayed in. The ants were all over the counter, in the drawers and cupboards, mainly in the kitchen but on the sofa as well.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Several agencies serve the complex. We had a bad experience with Palm Springs Rental Agency. In order to enable a cleaning, they offered to buy us dinner -- then refused to reimburse us for the $10 tip. When the cleaning failed and spraying was required (and we'd been up since 4am, seniors both) we asked to be put up elsewhere the first night. Agency offered a cheap old hotel but warned we'd be "much less comfortable" there. We'd have to pay the difference to be comfortable. Too tired to hunt and move we stayed, for a miserable sleepless night. My resistance thus depleted, I caught bronchitis and had two doctor visits. As we couldn't really settle in for three days and incurred considerable extra costs we asked for a one-week refund. After two weeks, Agency only offered to cancel our remaining charge if we vacated THAT DAY, both impracticable and another financial penalty to us. They seemed determined to make us pay for THEIR mistakes (inadequate cleaning, delay in spray and exterminator, etc.).
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I'd recommend the Deauville but not our condo and certainly not that Agency. Their treatment was as shabby as the furnishings.
Things to do in this area
Sherman's Deli is great. We'd take half the lunch home for dinner. One of the ant-sprayers told us if you hit the Casino breakfast buffet around 10-10:30 you can enjoy the lunch buffet for no extra charge. But alas, my wife is cutting down on my buffets.
