Vacation rentals in United States, Canada, Mexico (condos, cottages, houses, apartments)
Review 5350: Owner, #19063
4bed/2bath house in Wellfleet, Massachusetts
July 2012, one week
Then rental was located directly across the street from Mayo Beach in Wellfleet, MA. Literally steps to the beach. A very nice area, with several other rentals nearby but lots of privacy. A playground, tennis court, and basketball court are close by.
Many restaurants to walk to, a bookstore, ice cream, fish market and "seafood shack" Further in town (about a mile) several more restaurants, galleries, and a small grocery. We drove to Stop and Shop about 12 miles out for an initial grocery run. A little tough walking on some of the streets because they are very narrow, and some spots don't have a sidewalk, so would not recommend for kids to make the walk.
The house was in great shape. Slider from deck enters a large fully stocked kitchen (pots/pans, blender, coffee pot, etc), dishwasher. Eat in kitchen that seated four in addition to a full dining area, that seated eight. Dining area opened to living room with leather couch and love seat. Two bedrooms on first floor with shared bath in between, (tub/shower).
Upstairs two bedrooms (one queen, one bunk bed set up that could fit probably two more adults and a child, or several children, and one twin it the area between the bedrooms. Bath with shower upstairs. There is a view of the water from the upstairs bedroom and you can see the moonrise beautifully from the dormered windows. Old fashioned upstairs, very modern downstairs. My niece and nephew loved looking into what they called the "secret passage of doom" upstairs (LOL)! The kind of nooks and crannies rooms one remembers from houses past with latches on the doors.
There is also a private deck off the upstairs bedroom with a slider onto it.
Two very large decks with chairs for lounging or eating. Grill and outdoor shower. Large backyard with swings that was shared with the owner. This worked out very well, as their grandchildren were visiting, and played with my niece and nephew. The decks however were private.
Extremely comfortable living space. Clean and comfortable. Large flat screen HDTV in living room with every channel imaginable and DVD player. Flat screen TV in one bedroom on the first floor as well. Window air conditioner in the living room, and two bedrooms kept things cool.
Furnishings were durable enough for a beach rental, while being of good quality. The house was definitely a house and not a cottage.
The beds were comfortable enough. Many pillows, and they were synthetic which was appreciated by the forever allergy sufferers in my family! You bring your own linens, pillowcases etc.
Personally I prefer a firmer bed, but it was fine. There is no air conditioning upstairs. It is not a place to spend time during the day, but even on the hottest night was completely cool from the cross breezes. I had the blankets on!
Both bathrooms were up to date and modern with enough storage space.
Completely stocked, and equipped for cooking full meals. We cooked and grilled a couple of nights. Bosch dishwasher, very nice.
Problems or Bonuses
Two surprises, one was the lack of air conditioning upstairs, but it didn't turn out to be a problem at all, and in fact would have been too cold with AC. The fans and open window were just fine. But be aware that with open windows, you will have some street noise, not a lot, but people do walk by and they are talking, and the birds will wake you, but for me that was a joy.
The second was that the owners live downstairs in the basement apartment, and they have a little place across the street too. We were wary of this at first, but they were just lovely people, and said not to "tiptoe" around etc. Their granddaughter as I mentioned played with my niece and nephew, and the owners were around if needed but definitely not in your face at all and gave us our space completely.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
My sister in law booked the property directly with owner via her listing on weneedavacation.com. We rented July 4 week and the cost was $3000.00. Everything was as described. So nice to have someone else do the booking and planning for this one!
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Absolutely we would stay here again, and are already talking about plans for next year, so don't even think about booking it LOL!
Things to do in this area
Tons of things to do as mentioned above. Try Wellfleet oysters, sit on the beach (we were on the bay side vs the Atlantic side, so it is a good beach for kids, tide goes out very low, bring water shoes - lots of sea-life/shells), take a walk to the "Restaurant/Bookstore". Reggae fest on July 4, parade right up the street from the house. Further down several restaurants, an outdoor theater, and indoor theater (didn't make it to any productions, but they were doing outdoor Shakespeare for free and the Harbor stage had something going on too).
Take a ride to Cahoon Hollow on the National Seashore to see the giant dunes, waves, and have a drink and dinner at the Beachcomber.
