Review 816: Owner, Bay Vista
Studio/sleeps 2, Kaneohe, Hawaii
February 2004, One Month
The Bay Vista lives up to its name! This open L-shaped studio built above the owners 2 car garage with private entrance affords a fabulous view of Kaneohe Bay on Oahu. The wall of glass between the studio and the lanai extends the spacious feeling and gives you a birds eye view of passing storms and the ever changing colors of the sea. The hosts are beyond gracious and the privacy incomparable. The unit sits high up above a side street that feeds local traffic to town but we only noticed noise (aside from twice a week garbage pickups) if and when everyone in the neighborhood decided to cut their grass all on the same afternoon! It is a quiet suburban location with easy access to everything you'd want to visit on Oahu.
Though there is a major shopping center and mall within a 5 minute walk up ther street, none of these conveniences are part of your visual or aural experience.
A car is a must though. Here we based our month's trip and went north to see the fabulous winter waves, we drove to Kailua 10 minutes away almost every day to swim or walk on the beach, we drove over one of three highways that connect the Windward side to Honolulu in 20 minutes for museums, restaurants, et al. though it is important to avoid the long morning and evening rush hour in planning these trips.
The Bay Vista studio is simple, clean, elegantly furnished and the kitchen has all the amenities you will need for an extended visit. Though no range (stovetop or oven) is available, due to local zoning, there are electric appliances to fill the gap (microwave, electric frypan, etc.).
This is the only unit on the owners property and there are no others in the neighborhood that we were aware of. The owner provides a dedicated parking spot in front of the house.
There is no pool but the lanai and its vistas were entertainment enough for our needs and a great location for painting as well.
The main dining space is outdoors on the lanai through a sliding door. On occasion we were chased inside by mosquitos and used the easy chairs in front of the TV for dining. There is a small breakfast bar as well. The owner schedules a weekly cleaning and linen change.
There is a complete entertainment center with cable TV/VCR/CD player.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Originally booked through Pacific Islands Reservations, but you can book via the owner's web site.
The owner's website provided, www.bayvistahawaii.com, no longer seems active.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We would definitely recommend the Bay Vista, especially to those seeking a quieter base on the bustling island of Oahu.
Things to do in this area
There are many 'locals' restaurants right in Kaneohe, very reasonable priced. The owner provided us with an 'Entertainment' book which was filled with 'two-fers' for restaurants and other attractions. There is also a once weekly open green market next to the municipal tennis courts at which we found two-foot long local watercress as well as local and mainland fruits and veggies.
